PRESIDENT'S NOTES…..
This is my first message of the year and I want to tell you about some of the things we're working on as starters for the year. As I have attended the meetings of the past, I felt discouraged that Nor Cal was not taking a more aggressive approach to educating students and adults on the positive values of woodturning as an avocation or vocation.
I am then proposing we seek a grant from the AAW to purchase two (2) mini lathes and appropriative accessories to use for demo's and instruction at schools, fairs, club meetings and wherever we can promote woodturning.
We would organize teams of two or three members with a array of items to turn, discuss and hand out to the audience. We will have the opportunity to do this again this year at the State Fair.
When I was in the Military, it was impossible to get volunteers for anything. So, I'm going to take a different approach. I am going to ask you as an individual to help us out for whatever project or activity we may need help on. It could be assisting with a demo or just helping with a cleanup.
In the past, there has been an effort to have a demon at each general meeting. Usually by a Nor Cal member who was reimbursed for his time and expenses. I feel we should be anxious to give of our expertise to help other members lean from us so they can advance themselves in woodturning. Any savings we can make will help us expand our book and video library and other things we might need.
To keep from placing a burden on any one person for a year, we are going to ask help from you for a period of three months to assist with such things as meeting refreshments or the video libra ry, or the book library, or cameraman, or show and tell, or whatever we need help with.
To make an organization grow and prosper, everyone needs to participate in some way. If you've been holding back because you didn't feel at ease in front of people, don't worry about it. Come to me and ask what you can do to help!! I won't be embarrassed to say I don't remember your name, so don't feel bad is I ask it!!
I'm looking forward to this being a banner year for Nor Cal, so pay your dues and join the AAW and let's get going!!

DAVID SPRINGETT DEMO
We are privilege to have English Woodturner, David Springett do an all day demo for us on February 8.
His interest in wood began when he was a woodworking teacher. In 1983 (or thereabout) he left the teaching profession to pursue a career in woodturning. David and his wife, Christine, have developed a good business with him turning lace bobbins and she teaching lacing. However, this is not what he plans to talk about when he is here.
David's 'after hours' turning involves many intricate designs as can be seen in his book and video, “Woodturning Wizardry”. Some of the topics for the demo may include lattice circles, cub in cube in cube, mouse in cheese (using the Singapore ball technique), lattice pomander (front cover of Woodturning Wizardry), and spiked star in a cube. There may also be a slide presentation detailing the Ivories of Coburg (1620's and other, little known, early turned pieces).
This demo will appeal more to the advanced turner, HOWEVER, others should get a lot of ideas for future turnings also.
As stated under Announcements: If you would like to attend this demo, the cost is $25 per person, with seating being available on a first pay basis.
The class will start at 9:00 am and run to 4:00 p.m. with a lunch break. You may either bring your lunch or purchase a Togo's sandwich the day of the demo. One drink will be provided with lunch. Maps will be available at the meeting or call Kirk for instructions.

TRENT BOSCH DEMO……
Coming in March is another workshop demo featuring Trent Bosch. As a young man, Trent, studied to become a teacher, but found his love of woodturning a more powerful draw. In his business he does both ornamental (art pieces) and utilitarian pieces. The woods he uses are 'rescued woods', hence the name of his business: Rescued Wood Bowl Company.
His artistic turnings appear to be layered, but are really turned from one piece of wood. He likes to explore grain, color and texture while exploring form.
If you are interested in attending this demo, either Friday, March 21 or Saturday, March 22, please sign up and pay the $25 fee at the meeting. (The same demo will be given each day.) The demo will be held at Kirk Stubbs shop.
This demo should appeal to everyone, with more emphasis on intermediate and advanced turning.
