PRESIDENT'S NOTES

A lot is going on with NorCal at this time. Our regular meeting showed the beginning of things with the addition of two monitors to help the viewing of our demos. They will also be used for our out-of-town demonstrators and where ever else they will be of help.

I have been in contact with Jet and they have volunteered to supply NorCal, for our educational program, two Jet Mini Lathes with stands, chucks and accessories at NO cost to us. It will be a big help in promoting woodturning demos to schools and organizations.

At our February meeting, we will explain the program to you and get your input and help in making it work.

Michael Cox is setting up a new web page and will act as webmaster.
The site is located at: http://www.norcalwoodturners.org

See you at the meeting.

DAVID SPRINGETT'S FEB. DEMO

(clisk on any of the images for the image gallery)

DSC00004.JPG DSC00005.JPG Thirty five people spent the day at Kirk's shop listening to and watching David Springett as he took us through the intricacies of turning spheres, balls in balls, lattice work, and puzzles. He took us through the steps of simple lattice work, as pictured here. The part to be worked with a lattice is secured to a faceplate with small screws-one in the center and 3 around the edge. The rim is turned separate and the two pieces joined.

He showed his tools for this purpose-wood chisels ground to 1/16” and 1/8” scrapers. He uses a homemade tool rest for this work which consists of a dowel that fits in the tool rest holder with a 'table' on top as a guide to keep the tool flat.

DSC00031.JPG He showed how he makes the cube in cube and the chuck for holding the cube, also the plugs used to stabilize the already cut portions.

How about mice in cheese? He showed his special chucks for mounting the 'cheese' and how to make the mice (Turning Trickery).

One thing I found interesting, when he marks his tools to set the depth of cut, he uses white out. It is easy to see!

Much of what he talked about and demonstrated is in his Turning Wizardry book and his new book, Turning Trickery (puzzle making). After the demo he presented a slide show of very early turned/carved pieces from the 15th and 16th century.

DSC00049.JPG Kirk had three monitors set up around the shop so everyone was able to get a close up of the turnings! Special thanks to Floyd Gibson for running the camera all day! Very good day!

In order to expedite the raffle, and allow more time for the meeting and speakers, we will be posting raffle numbers on a board. At the time of the raffle, you will be asked to line up in order of your winning ticket number. Please respect the ticket holder whose number precedes yours. In the case of a person holding more than one winning number, please take your first choice and return to the line for the next choice. This will be explained at the meeting.

GALLERY SHOWING

We had a GREAT Show and Tell Table at the January meeting! Thanks to everyone for participating.

DSC00034.JPG Jose Pantoja showed several pieces: two vases, and two very nice boxes, one with a finial top and the lid turned of the same wood as the bottom and the other box of single species wood.

DSC00021.JPG Tom Castaldo showed 2 angels, one was hanging from a frame with a brass bow at the top. He made 38 angels as Christmas gifts. They are made of Maple burl, with chatter work on the back. The second angel was made of Redwood Burl. He took lessons from a Texas turner to learn the process.

DSC00023.JPG Ron Winterton showed a Claro Walnut platter.

DSC00040.JPG Glenn Robison showed a Walnut square box with a rounded top and lid.

DSC00026.JPG Herb Medsger showed a very nice Walnut bowl with beading on the outside. The edge of the bowl is inlaid with copper wire. The second piece was a vase of Douglas Fir. After this was turned, he used a wire wheel to clean out carbon spots and smoothed it with a brass wire brush.
The finish is Cordovan shoe polish.

DSC00002.JPG DSC00006.JPG Mets Lerwill showed a couple of boxes turned from Eucalyptus and a 'Silly' stand cradling a ball. He also showed a box with a glass bird inside.

TRENT BOSCH DEMO

Date: March 21, repeat on March 22

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Location: Kirk Stubbs' Shop (Corner of Matson and Sylvia in Sacramento

Cost: $25.00

Lunch: Bring your own, send out, or go get it.

As a young man, Trent, studied to become a teacher, but found his love of woodturning a more powerful draw. In his business he does both ornamental (art pieces) and utilitarian pieces. The woods he uses are 'rescued woods', hence the name of his business: Rescued Wood Bowl Company. (He specializes in enclosed vessels.)

His artistic turnings appear to be layered, but are really turned from one piece of wood. He likes to explore grain, color and texture while exploring form.

Trent plans to talk, discuss and demonstrate on how to prep wood, different grinds on tools, carving, bending, and sandblasting. He will also discuss what is good form and how to select wood for best figure. Different surface treatments will be discussed as will wood selection .

If you are interested in attending this demo, either Friday, March 21 or Saturday, March 22, please sign up and pay the $25 fee at the meeting or send your money to Barney Oldfield, 11170 Meadow Brook Drive, Auburn CA 95602. (The same demo will be given each day.) The demo will be held at Kirk Stubbs shop. (There is no limit for seating, but reservations are a must.)

This demo should appeal to everyone, with more emphasis on intermediate and advanced turning.
Here are some samples of Trent's work as captured from the web.

FEBRUARY DEMO

John Hale presented a very informative program last month on turning platters. He used Poplar for his demonstration and stated it was the best wood for practice. Platters are a good way to show off special grains of wood.

For a foot diameter, he uses a 3-2 ratio, or whatever looks appropriate. A chuck is screwed to the face of the plate, using care not to set the screw too deep in the wood. If necessary a spacer is used between the faceplate and the blank. He then marked both the outer and inner edge of the foot. The inner edge of the foot was then turned to receive a jaw chuck (slight bevel for jaw). From there John turned from the outer scribe line to the rim and sanded to finish. He made a simple tool from a concrete nail to scrape a sharp edge for the jaw. The handle is a dowel.

The plate was then reversed to allow shaping on the face side. He did scribe the rim diameter before starting the center of the plate and cut deep enough to remove the screw holes. The edge was then trimmed and sanded to finish. John's tools for the project were a scraper and bowl gouge.

John also discussed a couple of other ways to mount platter blanks, glue blocks, etc. We received a lot of information in a short period of time!

Thank you, John!
